Alternative Medicine – Natural Healthcare From Past to Present

Alternative and Complementary Medicine - Considerations

Healthcare and traditional medicine have changed a great deal in this country in the last few years. There are many factors responsible for these changes; but one of the biggest reasons is that people want alternatives to what the traditional medical providers offer them. They want to be more in charge of their lives and using alternative medicine or complementary medical therapy is one way to do that.  We are an aging population, finally realizing that preventing disease or using alternative medicines to fight existing diseases might be the way to go to stay in charge of our health. Complementary medicine and alternative therapies can be many things. In the strictest sense, alternative therapies are used alone such as acupuncture or reflexology for particular health problems. Alternative and complementary medicine is a term used when alternative therapies are combined with traditional medicine. Sometimes doctors will prescribe certain medication; but they also see the value of visiting the acupuncturist. This is happening more, more as doctors are more open-minded, and wanting what is best for the patient.

Alternative methods of healing date back to 5000 years.  The Chinese used herbs, acupuncture, and Indians used Ayurvedic medicine. The tradition of using herbs, acupuncture, chakra healing, homeopathy, aromatherapy, massage therapy, naturopathy, holistic healing and so much more is decades and even centuries old.  Herbal alternatives to medicine are one of the oldest forms of healthcare known to man. Throughout history, there are references for medicines and healing assistance from herbal remedies and this is not just folklore. Plants were the only form of medicine throughout the centuries and much of the information on how to best use these alternatives has been lost. We are now beginning to understand the importance of herbal medicine. Assimilation of these herbal medicines may be through herbal supplements, herbal skincare, herbal tea and much more. Doctors were once thought of as people that would facilitate the natural healing of the body. They worked with the mind, body, and spirit connection to have energy flow in a more balanced manner throughout the body. They worked to improve lifestyles and prevent problems instead of just masking symptoms with a drug of choice.

No one can dispute the breakthroughs in medicines and disease that science and the pharmaceutical industry has had over the years. Penicillin, powerful anti-biotic medicines, cortisone, insulin and so many more medicines have given us better quality of life. There are more good drugs coming out every year; but there is still alternatives that we can do for ourselves if we go back to our roots. It is said, “If one listens carefully to the body; it will say exactly how to heal itself”. This method of using medicine and self-healing and listening has been lost, but as people are getting into alternatives and things that are more natural and opening up to the possibilities; this conversation is getting started again.

Using Alternative Therapies and Medicines – Tell Your Doctor

According to the New England Journal of Medicine, 1 in 3 patients used alternative therapy in 1990 and 80 percent of those people never mention using the alternative to their physician. That same 80 percent of people are using alternative remedies and healing medicines passed down through generations. Keeping these healing alternative practices a secret from our doctors is happening less and less as western medicine is catching up to eastern traditional medicine. The health insurance industry is taking note of alternative medicines and healing popularity as well. More companies are accepting claims based on these ancient medicines and alternative techniques. Policies can be purchased that allow different types of alternative and natural healing to be covered by insurance. This was unheard of only a few years ago. Information is power and we are still consumers so read as much information as possible when it comes to alternative care. There are viable scientific studies available to see just how effective an alternative therapy and natural medicine may be for any health issue. Use the internet and research libraries and there are many good databases out there of alternative practitioners in any area.

There are many things to consider before adding complementary medicine and alternative healing techniques into a lifestyle. Many of us want the “Magic Bullet” from medicine that will cure us but most of these regimes do not offer a quick fix. We ask the pharmaceutical industry to give us the “medicine of the week” that will take care of the problem. Most of the time patience is required and the body will heal at it’s own pace.  If you are searching for an alternative method of health care or some ideas that ring true to assist healing or bring relief from stress and anxiety; consider some of the following when making those important medicine or health related choices:
