Health is such an important issue to all of us. What is quality of life if health is less than optimal? When we try to figure out how to stay healthy where does health or disease really start? Why is it that some people very healthy and others are are not? Of course genetics play a certain role, but there has to be more to it. Health really begins in our consciousness. What we think about ourselves, good and bad, is what is created in life. Energy will follow what is focused on, so if it is thought that sickness is the norm then sickness is what will be created and vise versa. Consciousness is the beginning; but as we know, being proactive in our health and creating a healthy lifestyle is where the rubber meets the road.
Americans spend millions of dollars every year promoting health and wellness. Just take a look at the increase in numbers of health clubs around the country. This was unimaginable a few decades ago. Obesity was rare and people were much more active. When baby boomers were kids; it may be hard to remember any friends that were obese. Television was new and there were no computers. We walked more and worked in jobs that were more physical. Our food industry has become processed and anything fast is good. Alternative and complementary medicine, remedies and ancient therapies were certainly around in those days but they weren’t as popular and highly ridiculed. Anyone who did yoga or was a vegetarian was far out of the mainstream and considered weird. In the 40’s and 50’s new drugs were coming onto the market and science held such promise for cures of all types of health issues. Our environment has changed through the decades and we have changed with it; not always for the better when it comes to healthy or unhealthy lifestyles.
Here’s a closer look at these and how it is so important to promote health in everyday lifestyle.
Positive Attitude with a Spiritual Connection – This is directly related to the concept of what is thought consciously is what is created. When a positive attitude is maintained along with affirmations we feel better. The mind, body, spirit connection has long been connected and having that sense of spiritualism in life gives us a sense of not being alone in this world. It is the support group for the soul that can really make the difference when it comes to health. Meditation is a way to connect with spirit and reduce stress at the same time. Slow down and listen to what the body is trying to say. We do far too much talking and not enough listening. The answers to questions regarding health may very well lie in the silence. There are many forms of meditation done alone, or it can be combined with a form of exercise such as yoga or Tai chi. Connect to something higher than yourself and see how that makes you feel.
Healthy and Nutritious Diet – Since obesity is a national health problem; it is important to carefully take a look at what is eaten throughout the day. The food groups have been changed throughout the years as it is learned we need more vegetables, whole grains and less starch. Eating a variety of foods is thought to be better instead of eating the same things over and over again. Generally it is agreed to eat less sugar, salt and animal fat. Many say to eat several small meals instead of 3 large ones. Being a vegetarian may be good for some and not for others, but eating too much protein isn’t good either. Others suggest organic food is the only way to eat because of the natural growth cycle and no pesticides. The fast foods had taken over the food industry; but we can eat simple balanced meals and feel good about it. There are many cookbooks and magazines available to promote healthy eating and it isn’t necessary to spend all day in the kitchen. We may be starting to drink enough water because we can buy it at any corner; but we need at least 8 glasses of water a day to keep the body lubricated and everything functioning properly.
Supplements of Vitamins, Minerals and Herbs – The topic of vitamins and herbal supplements are huge and there are many reasons why people should take them to support their bodies. If the body is deficient in certain nutrients; it will break down and become sick. Diets aren’t what they once were and the foods we eat don’t provide the rich vitamin sources we need. Any physician can do testing to see what is needed in the body. Quality of product is somewhat of an issue because many of these products are not regulated by the FDA and are not quality controlled. Ask a practitioner what product is best for specific health issues. Health stores have grown and there are many websites where these products can be purchased.
Physical Fitness, Exercise and Activity – As more weight is gained in this country; more exercise machines are sold. That is a good thing unless the health and fitness equipment gets turned into a support for clothing. People are looking for ways to stay fit in common ways such as jogging, walking, aerobics, treadmills, walkers and more. There are alternative methods of staying fit that are becoming popular as well. The Pilates method of exercise is a means of staying fit through stretching exercises and was developed for dancers rehabbing from injury. Yoga and tai chi are exercise routines that bring a slow meditative response to the program. Qigong is a Chinese exercise that reduces stress and anxiety while improving health and fitness. It stimulates the flow of energy or chi throughout the meridians of the body. Dancing and movement therapy is great for the emotions as well as the body. You can dance exactly how your body feels is should go. It can be very liberating to just let the body move. Breath is life, so breathing properly through exercises can instantly calm anxiety and reduce stress and have a healing influence on the body and emotions. Don’t forget about getting back to nature and how calming and restorative it can be. Gardening and landscaping are great because the hands touching the earth and living things is great for the body and spirit.
Rest and Relaxation – Stress is one of the biggest reasons for disease and illness. It is so important to leave the problems at work and at least be calm and harmonic at home. This can be achieved through meditation, or just getting enough sleep. We are so busy taking care of the children that we don’t let the body regenerate with enough sleep. People think and perform better when they are well rested. The body also needs time to heal and regroup during sleep. If people would just get a little more sleep at night; they would be miles ahead regarding their health.
Positive Support Groups, Friends and Family – It is important to have positive supportive people around us. If people are having a negative influence on what is done or how life is lead; it can become a bad influence on the person and they may stop all of the good progression they are making. People might stop exercising, or continue overeating. They may continue smoking just to be part of the crowd or worse yet; continue with drugs. It is important to maintain positive, helpful, supportive people around us and not let others break our resolve to continue on with healthy habits and lifestyles.
Positive Habits Regarding Smoking, Drugs, and Alcohol – A lifestyle that is healthy cannot include smoking, drugs. Alcohol is said to be okay if taken in moderation. Red wine is even reported as being good for the body. There are reasons that people want to mask feelings and become “numb”. If people have the courage to dig deep into their psyche; they may discover the underlying cause of overindulging in negative habits. Addictions are difficult to break but with the right support and therapies, it is possible to stop smoking and doing drugs and allow the body to be healthy, naturally.
Health should be maintained at all cost. If we live healthy and happy lifestyles; we will have a better chance of keeping healthy as we age.
